PoE Or Wi-Fi Cameras:
Which Should You Run?

One is wired, powered, and always on. The other goes up in minutes with no cable. The right answer depends less on the camera and more on the job.

Once you have decided to put up cameras, the next fork is quieter but matters more than it looks: do you run PoE cameras or Wi-Fi cameras? They can watch the same driveway and look identical on a shelf, but they install differently, fail differently, and suit different homes.

Here is the difference in plain terms, and how to tell which one your situation actually wants.

The Difference In One Line
PoE runs on a cable. Wi-Fi runs on your network. Everything else follows from that.

Option One

PoE — One Cable Does Everything

PoE stands for Power over Ethernet. Each camera runs on a single Ethernet cable that carries both its power and its video at once — no separate power adapter, no wireless signal to hold. That one wire runs back to a PoE switch, and from there to the recorder.

The payoff is reliability. A wired camera is always powered and always connected; it does not drop when the Wi-Fi gets busy, and it is the right foundation for a permanent, multi-camera system that records around the clock. The trade-off is the cable: someone has to run it, which is easy in new construction or an accessible attic and harder through finished walls.

Wi-Fi — Up In Minutes, Anywhere There Is Power

A Wi-Fi camera skips the data cable entirely. Give it a power outlet and a decent signal, and it is watching in minutes. That makes it the obvious pick where running Ethernet is impractical or not allowed — a rental, a finished room, one spot you want covered without opening a wall.

The trade-off is the flip side of PoE's strength: a Wi-Fi camera shares your home network. If the signal is weak at that corner of the house, or the network is congested, the stream can stutter or drop — which matters more for a camera meant to record continuously than for one grabbing the occasional clip. It also still needs power at the camera, so "wireless" means no data cable, not no wire at all.

Reach For Wi-Fi When

A single camera, a place you cannot cable, a rental, or somewhere you want coverage today. When flexibility beats permanence — go wireless.

Most homes end up with both — wired PoE cameras doing the heavy, permanent exterior coverage, and a Wi-Fi camera or doorbell filling the one or two spots where a cable was never going to happen.
